My Shifting Issues

So, I finally got around to getting the car out of the trailer, since I have an instructing event coming up. Went thru the hassle of pulling the transmission out - and, discovered why it was so hard to get into gear:

Re: My Shifting Issues

so, now the dilemma begins - which T/O do I choose.
I like the idea of the Tilton for the tremec -- does not appear to use Shims....

thoughts, input, etc...?

Re: My Shifting Issues

No slave - hydraulic throw out bearing...

Now, upon deeper inspection (after shower, food and a beer) - the T/O seems to be OK - what broke is the shaft off the retaining plate that bolts onto the transmission....

so, what could cause this breakage?
Defective product on the housing?
Mis-Alignment of transmission to clutch/flywheel?

Odd thing, I never felt vibrations or heard any noises -- I am very puzzled on this one.

So, this is what I am considering : http://www.tiltonracing.com/content.php?page=hydraulic
waiting on call backs from Tilton and Modern Driveline before I purchase...

Re: My Shifting Issues

Devin, that is a fairly "common" thing, what we may want to do is have a new sleeve machine to increase the strength and remove the use of the shims, at least most of them!

Re: My Shifting Issues

I just bought a Quartermaster hydraulic throwout bearing direct from them. A little over $200 plus freight. Same one I used in a GT-1 car we used to race. Shims go between the bearing and slave. Pretty nice set up.

Don't know about the bearing retainer bearing slide shaft breaking. If things were that far out of alignment you'd think it would show up elsewhere. You can by a new one (TKO 600) for about $90 from Mustangs Unlimited. I think they fit 3550, TKO 600-500.

Re: My Shifting Issues

How is a hydraulic throwout bearing different from a slave cylinder? Looks alot like the slave in my Corvette.

Re: My Shifting Issues

matter of terminology definition:

Internal slave cylinder is located inside the bellhousing and is mounted either on or in place of the bearing retainer. It replaces the throwout bearing. External slave cylinders push or pull a clutch lever from outside the bellhousing...

either way, my shaft on my bearing retainer broke, don't know why, so, I am looking for something different.

Devin, I purchased the Tilton unit for my car. Nicely engineered. Completely replaces the Tremec input shaft bearing support
9which it seems you need to replace anyway!!) and adjusts by threading the bearing fore and aft so no shims required. You still need to get the adjustment correct though.........!!
