2001 Dodge Caravan SE Transmission change

Last week on my way to work, the transmission in my 2001 Caravan SE went out. It happened w/o warning too. I stopped at a red light and it started jerking and when I stepped on the gas, it wound out but wouldn't move for a few seconds...then it jumped into gear, but made a crunching, whining noise. I drove it for a few miles and when I stopped, smoke was coming from the dipstick tube and out of the wheel well (driver's side). It has no reverse or park and will only move in Drive. It went into limp mode also.

My question is: How hard is it for me to pull the tranny myself? I have the Haynes manual and want to attempt this soon as this is my family's only vehicle and we are tight on money for repairs. Any and all help and advice will be greatly appreciated. Also, what exactly do I need to replace? IE: Torque Converter, etc.. By the way, it is a 2001 Caravan SE, 3.3 4 speed, flex fuel.

Thanks Guys!
