transmission removal

While under my dad's '99 CV for other repairs, I noticed that the rear main seal is leaking. There is also some indication that the rear seal on the transmission tail piece is leaking. How difficult would it be to remove/reinstall the transmission with the vehicle up on jack stands in the driveway? Approximately how much does the transmission weigh? Is there some kind of a transmission lift that is small enough to fit under a vehicle on jack stands? I won't have a problem replacing the rear main seal once the transmission is removed, but what does it take to replace the rear seal on the transmission?

Re: transmission removal

I never removed mine yet. I just asked the same question because I wanted to change the torque converter but most say it's a PITA.

If the leak isn't that bad, you could probably get away with leaving it be.

The tailshaft housing seal should be straight forward by removing the drive shaft. While the driveshaft is off, it's a great time to replace the U-joints.

Re: transmission removal

They make a low profile transmission jack that only raises a little over 24 inches. See if a local parts house has a loaner or one you can rent. If you get the jack, it is not that hard. You need to either twist, turn and manuever the transmission to get it to clear the converter. Or remove the converter. Good luck.

Re: transmission removal

Doing one with a floor jack you will need someone to raise and lower the jack and help hold the transmission.

Re: transmission removal

I will definitely look into the transmission floor jack loan out/rental situation. Does the exhaust system or any part thereof need to be removed to pull the transmission? It didn't appear to me to be in the way, unless blocking access to some of the bolts that need to be removed, although I only looked it over briefly.

Re: transmission removal

There is room to remove it without removal of the exhaust. That is where the twisting and turning of the transmission comes in. I think the right side is close due to the starter mounting.
