1997 Chevy Blazer Not Starting
I bought a 1997 Chevy Blazer LS 4-door, 4x4 last week that was not running. I brought it home and put a new battery in it and tried to start it up.
I noticed that the fuel pump was not coming on, so I checked the main ignition wire for spark(it had very good spark) and sprayed starting fluid down the intake port. The Blazer started immediately and ran well as long as I was spraying starting fluid down the intake port. So, the next day I installed a new fuel pump. The new pump turned on and appeared to pump up properly, but the Blazer would not start. So, I checked to make sure the fuel filter wasn't clogged. (it wasn't, there was strong fuel flow through the filter) Next, I rechecked my spark (which was still good) and tried to start the engine spraying starting fluid like I had the day before. This time the engine would not start even with starting fluid sprayed in the intake port. Has anyone encountered this problem before? |

Re: 1997 Chevy Blazer Not Starting
Starting fluid is dangerous and can cause severe engine damage, use carb cleaner instead.
Is there a good blue, not orange, spark at each plug while cranking? Check fuel pressure and leakdown. Key ON, engine off, fuel pump running: pressure must be 60psi to 66psi and must remain above 55psi for 3 to 5 minutes after the fuel pump shuts off.

Re: 1997 Chevy Blazer Not Starting
What would cause it not to start the second time with starting fluid?

Re: 1997 Chevy Blazer Not Starting
They have bad ignition switches which could be the problem. When you turn the key on if your warning lights and guages dont work i would check the ignition switch.

Re: 1997 Chevy Blazer Not Starting
Hi Bobboo,
Thank you for the reply. The system seems to have a good spark and the dash lights and gauges all come on when I go to start it. Also, the Blazer started using starter fluid the day before, so I don't know why it won't now. Robert |

Re: 1997 Chevy Blazer Not Starting
Hi Old Master,
Thank you for your reply. I'll have to get a fuel pressure gauge. It may take a few days before you hear back from me. Robert |
