Knock sensor

If I am correct the knock sensor senses knocks in the engine from advanced timing, and then retards the timing to correct the problem. does anybody know if the engine will run right without the knock sensor?

it will only pull timing when the sensor detects knock, or false knock. it will run without the sensor but the SES light should come on, for 4th Gens at least.
