Which kind of tranny do you have, automatic, or manual?
Automatic trannies don't usually make noise when they get low on fluid. They just stop shifting. The first problem you'll notice is that the transmission won't do anything when you put it in reverse. It gets worse from there.
Manual transmissions don't give off any noise when they get low: they just wear out a LOT faster. If you drain your manual transmission fluid (which, by the way, is just motor oil) if you've done serious damage, you'll find some filings from where chunks of your gears have been ground off.
