Engine not working

Hello everyone,

I have a caprice classic that we use as a taxi. We bought the car and drove it home. The engine did not run very smooth but it was ok. When we got home we changed all filters, fluids, plugs en wires. After we had done that it would not start anymore.

When we crank the engine it wil start and run nice for 1 or 2 seconds. After that it stalls. When we start it again it does the same. But when we rapidly push the trothel and lose it (keep doing this) the engine keeps running but very rough. When we put barkleen i believe it is called the ening will run also. After stopping it wil stall.

We allready have tried al lot to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. I hope some one can help us because we really need the car in the season!

We are located in the south of the Netherlands (europe) and USA cars are very rare here, and so are the mechanics of those cars.

Best regards,

Ferdy

Re: Engine not working

First off, what year is the car and does it use carburetion or fuel injection?

Sounds like fuel delivery might be an issue. Check the fuel filter - if it was replaced but installed backward (they are directional), this could keep fuel from making it to the induction system.

If the car has a carburetor, take the air cleaner off and give the throttle a couple of 'pumps' while looking down into the throat with the choke butterfly open - you should see a stream of fuel on each pump.

If the car has fuel injection, check all fuses. Check the fuel pressure at the diagnostic port - if the car has throttle body injection (looks a lot like a carburetor), pressure should be 9-13 PSI. If the car has port injection (LT1, L99) fuel pressure should be 45-55 PSI.

Make sure also that the plug wires are installed properly - rotor points at the #1 cylinder on the distributor when cylinder 6 is TDC on the exhaust/intake strokes. From that #1 tower, the firing order (clockwise) is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. All cylinders on the driver side (left or port side) are odd numbered (1,3,5,7) with cylinder 1 at the front, the cylinders on the passenger side (right, starboard) are even (2 at the front, 4,6,8).

Another possibility is ignition timing - loosen the bolt at the clamp where the distributor meets the intake, and turn in one direction or the other while trying to get it running.

spark plugs should be removed and checked for cracks...check gap ..plug wires were change one at a time ? if not make sure there not hooked up to the wrong plug..

JUST BECAUSE THE PLUGS WIRES ARE NEW DOES NOT MEAN THERE GOOD ! always ohm out the wires for readings all that are about the same resistance...

usually the fuel filter will have an arrow on it this is pointing toward the engine ...when installed ..

post back what engine/year etc....
