Lexan windshield
Would someone know where I can purchase a lexan windshield for a
GTRA. Our glass windshield has cracked again ![]() Would it need a center support brace ? Any disadvantages by going to lexan ? Thanks, Bob |

Bob,
I think there are other older posts on this topic. Percy's is one of several places to get a molded windshield. I think you need 1/4" thick for our application. not sure which windshield (79-93 or 94-04) is the correct unit for our cars. If you do go lexan, get the surface coated. Cheaper to just run a cheap $100 mustang glass windshield, A lot of race series won't let you run lexan on the front glass.

Bob - we have debated this for awhile - it may reduce weight and allow for some "flex" -- however, the safety glass from a windshield, to most of us is far more beneficial than a few pounds.
I even had a large sheet of 1/4" Lexan and debated long and hard about making one -- in the end - Eric's comment is right on - call GlassMasters and have them install the 100.00 windshield. Devin

Five Star Bodies provides most of the windhshields for the NASCAR teams. I purchased ours from them through CV Products in Thomasville, NC. I did purchase a brace system as well, but the 1/4 inch version should be OK without it.

We purchased blemished (tiny specs...not in the field of vision) lexan windshields from Percy's High Performance. They were actually left over from some NASCAR prototypes they had manufactured for the Ford Fusion. We used the old glass windshield as a template to cut the lexan to size with a jig saw. They were both less than $125.00 each and they had serval more in stock.

FWIW since swapping our original cracked glass out for a fresh one we've had no issues since 2007. Our car was delivered w/ a cracked one and a new spare. Not sure what to attribute this one's longevity to (now that I said that it'll crack this coming weekend at the UTCC), but we took greater care w/ the foam installing the new one and the car now has GTS type suspension which is stiffer so the car isn't leaning and moving arounda s much. However, now that it's running 2:07s @ VIR full on Hoosiers it is subjected to much greater forces. So far the lexan one is just collecting dust... no need to swap it out yet.

We got tired of swapping the broken glass too. Sometimes they would last 1 weekend or 6 months. Be careful not to tighten too much and have a good foam bed. Our cars flex alot. Also lots of rocks at our tracks.
We ordered Lexan cut for a Mustang from Griggs Racing (Sonoma CA) and they fit fine. You will need 3 parallel 1" aluminum windshield supports. They can sell you the stock. This meets SCCA tech. You have to use Plexus or special cleaner with microfiber cloth. So far over a year and no issues. Broken or cracked glass windshield usually wont meet tech either so you could crack and get DQd w/o a spare. One concern is you can't use the windshield wiper with the Lexan (scratches it) so if you race in the rain much you have to use RainX or put the glass back. Kevin |

I neglected to mention I replaced my scratched lexan with glass after I purchased my GTS. Cost me $ 110 and about 20 min. to R&R.
Don't know how long it will last.... |
