exhaust help

i'm turning my 95 DOHC into a flat track racer, and i'm not sure what if any damage i would be doing to it if i shot the exhaust manifold through the hood, seeing as how i would be getting rid of the O2 sensors and cats, i know in a previous car i owned which was a 1.6 I4, simply cutting the exhaust so short decreased the backpressure enough to blow out the valves, so my question is, will i blow my engine if i run the exhaust through the hood??? also, i'm putting an aftermarket steering wheel in it, but not sure if i'll need to buy an adapter or if i can modify the brackets thats on it now and slip it on there, so any help would be great, thanks

Re: exhaust help

If you're getting rid of the HO2 sensors, you need to go carbed...

These engines shouldn't blow from a lack of back pressure. You will lose low end torque. You can compensate, of course, with a high stall converter and a steep differential (3.73s or 4.10s).

Re: exhaust help

You'd have to get a manifold that could support the carb and delete the injectors.

Edelbrock makes one. They offer it in both EFI and carb versions. I've only seen one panther owner use one and it's on an EFI setup with nitrous and a handful of other mods.

I also don't know what kind of tuning it would take since the transmission is electronically controlled. Unless you want to swap in a 5-speed manual too, which has been done very successfully before.

Re: exhaust help

Looking back at this, did you really swap in a DOHC 4.6L? If you did, you probably don't have room for headers, but if you have the SOHC 4.6 still, long tube headers are now available for our cars (92-02 model years) which can gain some power if you aren't hellbent on the exhaust going through the hood. They will also allow you to keep the EFI.
