trac off, ABS, check engine lights

I have a 01 Grand AM with a 4 cylinder engine. The usual trac off, abs and check engine light comes on. I had a mechanic do an ABS scan and told me the front wheel sensor was out. This as you know involves replacing the front hub assembly. In about a 2 months the lights came on intermittently and in 3 months was on all the time again. Once again I had the ABS computer scanned and the same right front wheel sensor was out. Having bought the first one at Chucks I thought what an idiot I was and bought the next one at NAPA. The same results in about a month the lights started coming on intermittently and within 4 months was on all the time. This time I think to myself that I must be doing something wrong although I could not figure out what as it is a simple procedure so I took it to a qualified mechanic and he replaced the same right front hub assembly. One again the same results. He warranted this one and checked all the wiring harness to the sensor and back to the computer noting appeared to be wrong. I am now wondering if for some very strange reason this needs to be a GM replacement part. I am determined to solve this problem. Any one has any ideas?

The OEM wheel bearing are much better than the aftermarket ones and will last much longer. However, you seem to be going through quite a few of these. I don't know how the install could be bad other than make sure that the axle nuts are properly torqued.

If you don't torque them they wont last. 99% of the wheel bearings I install come from NAPA. They have two different quality bearings. I only use the better quality ones and rarely have an issue.

- are tires the same size on the front?

- is tire psi same on the front?

- you have bad connector at the RF wheel. Try this: go to Auto Zone and buy some electrical connector cleaner (spray) and clean connector for the wheel speed sensor on both sides really good if necessary use little wire brush to clean the dirt or corrosion inside. Or you could have intermittent open in the wiring on the ebcm side of the connector.

If you are very determent to fix this Find EBCM (electronic brake control module) it is near the driver's side front head light you will see bunch of wires coming out from it but you have to find terminals A7 and A8. A7 will be tan wire, A8 will be dark green wire, then cut about 3 inches from the connector at the ebcm and run new set of wires to the RF wheel. Then cut connector complitely for the RF wheel speed sensor and install these connectors http://www.ouros.co.uk/image/dproducts/econnect/4.jpg (this is male version you will need two female sides also) connect so put for an example female connectors on wheel side and male on ebcm side of the wires. I recommend finding this connectors that come with plastic insulation for better protection from dirt and salty water during winter driving. Then you can put some heat shrink or electrical tape around them to keep dirt and water out. This should work

i know you'll think it's crazy but have a friend stand outside your car so they can see your backup lights (specifically the passenger side) and put your car in reverse. I'm willing to bet your passenger backup lamp is not coming on when you put your car in reverse. It is a common problem (i had it too) with the rear passenger side light circuit board. The contacts there just corrode all to heck. Try to get a new one since the junkyard ones are crappy too (been there done that). or just try cleaning the contacts with some smoll strips of sand paper for the time being.
