how can I open tailgate when cables were not put back correctly

Borrowed truck from my father-in-law to move lawn tractor and apparently I didn't put cables back in properly and now the tailgate is jammed...any suggestions?

Welcome to AF. Need to post year and model of truck. What cables are you talking about? Did you take the tail gate all the way off?

97 Silverado, the cables that hold the tailgate, one on each side, and no I did not take the tailgate all the way off.
