Range mode sensor?????

So I have a hard shift from 2 to 3rd, all other shifting is fine.....its way worse when its cold and there are absolutely no shift lights on the gauge cluster, and all the other gauges work fine.......So with the absence of shift lights i am assuming its the range mode sensor....I did pull it out and cleaned it really well and re greased it, but it made no difference and still no lights.....So I am ordering a new one......does this make sense or do you think i am wasting a couple hun??
