I just bought a '95 Eagle Talon ESI for $3000. I had a mechanic check it out, and he said that in the shape it's in, it's definately worth more than that, so get it. The guy I was buying it from is moving accross the country, and said that he needed the money, so if I didn't buy it he was going to part it out and junk the rest. Anyways, the 2nd day that I had the car, the alternator belt snapped. It looked a little tender, and the power steering belt was getting there, so I had both of them replaced. About an hour after that, they both snapped. So, I had the alternator checked, and replaced, then new belts put on, and the alternator belt just snapped again - I'm stumped! The 2nd 2 times they broke, I was spinning the tires, at like 6000 RPM. My mechanic can't see anything wrong with the car, so my question is, is this common, and if so, how do I fix it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Is it the right size belt? How tight are you tightening it? Also is your lower crank pulley separating? If so that would cause it to snap. Check for any sharp edges around your timing belt cover. When you apply tension to the belt, there should only be about 1/8-1/4" of deflection. Good luck, w/b with any more questions.

According to another thread, the crank pulley has a piece of rubber between the two pulleys that goes bad and creates a wobbling. This pulley needs to be replaced. Hope this helps you as it has helped me.

Re: Alternator Belt Keeps Snapping!
Do the NT motors also use the crank pulley with the shyte rubber middle? I assumed only the 4g63s had that problem with those falling apart. But that could do it. Over tigtening it, pulleys misaligned, etc.
