my name is Jonathan
I drive a 1988 Nissan Sentra
has 196,736 on the odometer
starting to rust
doors aren't working properly
gas and temperature gauge don't work
bonnet latch doesn't lock without the help of a flathead screwdriver
needs brake fluid every month
wheels need 2 be spraypainted
driver's side door lock is busted
transmission will stick if the car isn't allowed to warm up
it still drives and is actually a reliable thing even though it only has about 69 horsepower.......

You're going to have to define beater a little more clearly, but I think all three of my cars could be considered:
1969 Subaru 360, can go, but can't stop - multi colored interior (used to be blue shag) smokes so much it kills all mosquitos within a 20 foot radius.
1982 Toyota Corrola Tercel, nicest looking of the bunch, rust blisters around the rear windows, dents and dings, leaks/consumes entire crankcase oil capacity in 3000 miles (hey, oil changes don't require draining the engine!).
1988 Yugo GVX, sun faded paint, patches of primer and it's a YUGO!

I got my brother in laws 1990 ford Toerus. I drive it all the time, I do donuts with it, I buy Dontus with it. I don't wash it, the auto tranny was slipping last month but I did a fluid and filter change and its back to business, buying donuts.

Now stop that,we are all friends here.Dave was very brave and made a good decision to come to our meeting,he needs a little bit of extra support from the group because clearly he does not drive a beater out of neccesity,he does it because he enjoys it.Does your beater have a special role in your stable of vehicles,Dave or do you keep it for sentimental reasons?

My name is Emily, and I own a 1987 Ford Ranger XLT with 215,000 miles on it, an oil leak, a bad tranny, and a baaad habit of burning oil, turning it into black smoke.. let's not forget no A/C, spray painted black, I hit a deer going 70mph in it, and I threw it in a lake. Oh yeah I also back into the same tree every time I pull it out of its spot.

Luckily, I also own a hot lil sol so I don't have to drive the truck

Hi, I'm Jim. I drive an 86 Clubwagon van (Ford), Starts and runs great, but suffering severe body cancer. Every time I hit a pothole, filled or not, I have to do a quick check in the rear view mirror to see if the back end of the van is still with me. One of these days I'm gonna lose a door or two, if not the whole back end of the van. I'll have to replace this thing before next winter, I really don't think it will last another salting season.

I drive an 89 Accord w/ 220K miles on the clock and no fifth gear, but managed to eek out 30.5 mpg during a ~500 mile weekend.

No A/C either. And the clutch is slipping.

Ummm.. I've got a quasi-beater now in my Century. Though the car is really in pretty good shape. Only rust is on the door frames around the windows, gas guage shows about a quarter tank when full, and I had to add 4/10s of a quart of oil a couple weeks back. It has the world's tackiest deep purple tints (on a beige body), and I missed three teenage punks ripping off my hood emblem in NYC the weekend before last by all of about 30 seconds (little rascals! ). Amenities like the A/C and retractable antenna work fine. But, technically it is still a beater.
