Noober here with a question about emmissions

Hey everybody thanks for all the great information. I am debating on whether or not I should keep my 90 240sx fastback or go buy something else. It has 140k and needs about $1,000 worth of little things done to get it driving good again. I love my Nissan but want something with a little more power. I am very interested in doing a SR20DET swap but don't know of any reputable places here in Oregon to have it done. Is there anybody from Oregon/SW Washington in here that has done the conversion? And has anybody had any problems with meeting the emmission requirements of your city after you have done the conversion? I live in Portland so I have to go through DEQ here every few years. I don't want to race the car or anything like that (well I would like to give some of the newer cars a run for there money if the opportunity ever arose :silly2: ), I just don't really want to part with my 240...but I do want more power. Anywho thanks in advance for any input.

Depends what kind of setup you want and how much money you have. Going turbo or keeping a stock KA, big difference obviously.

If you go with an SR motor, that doesnt mean you wont have any problems.. buying a used motor can be risky. Its up to you whether or not you want to just TRY installing it and seeing if it works, or if you want to take it apart, prep it and restore it a bit, then install it into your car. Atleast that way, you know the condition of the internals.

As for your current motor, thats all up to you.. same scenerio.

Thanks for the replies. I think my brother has talked me into rebuilding my KA and just beefing it up for more power. Like you said old_s13 at least that way I will know what I'm getting. I'm just wondering how much I can do to it and still keep it reliable. I guess if I do everything correctly and use good parts it should be ok. I'm hoping to add at least 50-60 hp and lbs of torque to it if possible. I am getting really motivated now - I got blown away by a Neon yesterday, my 240 didn't stand a chance. Of course it was a shiny black SRT-4 my friend payed $21,000 for, but still, it's a Neon DANGIT!!!

Can I get pretty good results with my sohc engine or should I get one of the dohc and rebuild it? I know my questions are probably answered somewhere in these forums but I stayed up until like 2 am the last couple of nights reading, and still haven't found the answers I'm looking for. Most of the posts end up with people just bitchin' at each other back and forth - that is hard to keep reading through. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks all.

If you want that kind of power, look into building and turboing this motor OR get another motor. You will not get 50-60HP easily.

Thanks old. All brawn and no brains is right WolfPac. His interior is already starting to rattle and the car is only a couple weeks old.

I have the dough to start my rebuild now I just need to figure out what I want to do. I bought an extra core so hopefully I won't have much down time since my 240 is all I've got. The guys at realnissan.com sound like they know their stuff when it comes to the KA. Has anyone dealt with them or know anyone who has? I think I just send them my extra core and they do the rest.

I have a couple grand I am going to sink into it, (money I was going to put down on a new car until I test drove a few and realized that I enjoyed my 240 more than any of them) so hopefully that will get my engine ready to add a turbo setup, when I save up some more dough. I should also think about dumping my steel wheels and plastic wheel covers sometime...nah:toothless. I know a mechanic that said he would work on it with me and he would charge me around $20 an hour + beer, so that sounds pretty reasonable. What do you peeps think? can 2 grand get me a decent power increase to get me by until I get a turbo setup?

Oh yeah, if you only answer one of my silly questions please make it this one - is it just a waste to build up my engine if I'm not willing to add a noisy ass, screaming, exhaust system? Thebody don't wanna play dat game. Cool 8 posts and this hasn't turned into a pissing match yet!!!

personally, ide just fix whatever your engine needs fixing to keep it running, get an sr20det and build it on the site, get all the parts that you need, and when its ready, put it in. That way you will have a kick ass setup and motor that is brand new (if you build it of course) and you will know 100% that when you get on it, it won't break. but thats just me.
