Question Cats Or No Cats ?

Hi Everyone...

On the advice of my local Lamborghini Specialist I had my cats removed
from my Diablo Roadster and replaced with straight thru pipework (He said there is a danger of the cats been sucked back into the engine and destroying it)...

The result an awesome deafing sound plus flames coming ot of the exhausts at high power...BAD NEWS...where as I used to get a nice popping on the overrun I now get mini explosions like back fires...

It almost sounds like the car is fucked but many people say it shows performance and is in the cars character....ermmm

For now I have had a Lambo silencer box fitted till I decide what to do...but I must say this seems to make it to quiet....arhhhh

Well my question is to all you Lambo Guys and car experts...

Should I put the cats back on....I hear they are £3,000 each as well and I dread the day when they need replacing...

Should I put the straight thru pipework back on and risk the flames and and extra vibrations...

Does any one know of a decent sports exhaust for the Diablo and would it work on a non car cat ??

I have a Tubi Style exhaust fitted to my Ferrari and its awesome...

Thanks in advance for you help

Hi Jabba,

What part of the UK do you hail from? I wondered who your local 'expert' is! I'm in the UK and have only ever delt with Mike Pullen and the 'service' of HR Owen.

I spent a day at Mike's, and whilst there a fellow Diablo owner Ian had his CATs removed and replaced with a straight thru tubalar exhaust. I left early for a meal at Chris's pub and Ian said he'd catch up later. HOLY COW we heard him coming I can tell you!!! The entire pub emptied to see what the commotion was about - I had to smile as I overhead some old guy say "what this supposed to be, a bloody Supercar pub or summat?!"

It sounded wonderfull on full chat, but for me it's just *too* much. It can be so loud that you can't concentrate on driving - bad news IMO. Ian loves it tho so that's all that matters...

My advice is to find a straight thru exhaust that incororates 'expansion chambers' to cut down on the resonance and noise. I have only seen them in passing but I'll see if I can find out who makes 'em. Probably USA based if memory serves...

Local Dealer

Hi CA

Yes I have had very bad experiences at HR Owen, the guy I used to deal with was Anthony Shepstone (I think he's from New Zealand) the whole setup is a piss hole...they fucked up my 2wd so bad I had to trade it in for the Roadster...I would never trust them again !!!

Previous to that it was the great Jason Barker and Dell Hopkins both really nice guys and very knowlegable at where the Lambo Franchicise should have remained at AFN Reading....

I am from Herts so although not down the road I have been spending many days at Carrea Sport, Hayward Heath...and the great Mike Pullen and Chiris (dont know his second name)....as you say...

Mike did do the straight thru exhaust system for me but although I like the extra noise, I do not like the explosive 'popping' on the over run..I like 'popping' but not the backfire noise...I also think the exhausts must suffer from all that extra vibration...

Well I really would like to go into detail with you on this so perhaps you could give me your ICQ or messenger number and we could have a good chin wag...

Thanks for your interest

Red face Straight pipe

When you say your exhaust is a straight thrugh pipe, do you mean, pure striahgt pipe. No muffler, No resenator, no nothing??

If that is the case. i don't recommand you to do it. because it is bad for the engine and you waste power and petrol.

Striaght pipe is for Drag cars that they are truned in a way these cars don't need back pressure. And Diablo is not made for that. I admit that the sound does not just appear to be a little louder, in fact, its like thundering, but there is not point of making your engine suffer as the result.

The back fire 'popping' is normal, its the magnifired sound of the little pop you had before, and since yours is a straight pipe, then you should have some sort of flame coming out of the exhaust. It sounds lose is because the engine hasn't been truned to be a straight pipe car.

If you want performance plus a loud sound, i suggest to go with custom designed 3 1/2 du exhaust complete with muffler (muffler varies from sound, some provide a louder or sharper sound, some is deep), resenator and high flow cats. From doing that you balance the best pressure for ur car and you still get a loud noise with your poping sound, although there is no flame coming out of the exhaust when you reving at 7300rpm.

However if you really fancy a straight pipe, then you have to change your engine configuration. which can be cost prohabitated. Engine needs to be retruned for straight pipe drag formation and many of your engine piping would also have to change. Metafor which you can change and trun your car's torque or horsepower.

if you have 4 - 2 - 1 then its for pick up higher torque
and 4 - 1 is for higher kilowatts, more top speed.

but if you have straight pipe as it is right now, it wastes petrol and losing power. those American cars (camaro)'s standard engine striaght pipe is 10 times louder than a hardy davison, but the exhaust is purely pumping out fuel instead.

Get a complete exhaust, go with du 3 1/2 inch racing exhaust (custom one is better they will see wuts best fit for your need and engine specs rather than just get one from a large manufacture). in the end, u want to hear engine mechanical scream not exhaust vibration when you reving at 7300rpm.

Piping

Sorry guys.:silly2:

made a mistake

for V12 cars, the piping would be V12, 3 cylinder per cam, 3 - 2 - 1 for pick up

and 3 - 1 for more horse power

there you go

cats

lucky for you that you can remove the cats...over here in the US, most states have smog laws and smog checks with an annual requirement to get your tailpipe electronically sniffed and they actually go under your car to check that your cat is in good working order. You can't register your car unless you have an official smog check done to your car by an independet garage...and the fees are going up....I know some guys who run no cats all year then when registration time comes around, they put the cats back on and put some fuel cleaner etc in the engine and rev around town to get the engine back in order

That sounds like the people where I live. Hey 360 Modena what kind of car do you drive. I see that it is a 1990. I drive a 1990 Oldsmobile and it is a piece of crap.

Diablo cats!

Don't hesitate to remove the catalytic converters on your Diablo. The flames coming out of the exhaust are nothing to worry about. They won't damge the car AT ALL.

Most OE exhaust systems have two elements. The cat and the silencer. The optional Sports Exhaust from Lamborghini themselves is as close as matters to unsilencing the car but removing the cat allows a genuine performance increase.

To take advantage of if fully, the cars ECU will need to be reprogrammed and a sports air filter will be required so that the car can 'inhale' as easily as it 'exhales' through the exhaust.

My brother used to have a Diablo - unfortunatley the resonance from
engine/exhaust system from 4000rpm onwards is made worse by de-catting or fitting a sports exhaust.....The sound though, is worth it!!!!

There's nothing that can be done about it.....This resonance/vibration still exists in the Murcielago......

He dealt with Lamborghini London on Old Brompton Road near Knightsbridge.

I actually posted this elsewhere, but it may help.

Al Burtoni's Milano Imports markets an exhaust, but I've heard a couple bad things about them. I saw one that was rusted withing 6 months, and another that was a very poor fit. My suggestion to you, take off 2 of your 4 cats with the Tubi bypass pipes. It's alot cheaper than full exhaust, you get a richer tone, and you "may" get mild performance gains without having to modify your computer/fuel management. If that isn't enough, then pony up for the tubi, it is a quality exhaust.
