Did you not hear about the U.S. Government bailout of chevy and dodge. Do you think a company that is going under will make the best quality car or cut corners to save money they don't have?

They are cheap mostly due to the cheap finish materials used and the lower level of quality in final assembly. They are no worse or better mechanically, they are just built with lower quality control standards. Like my 02 Caravan, the back hatch has bad gap issues and some of the interior plastics are malformed. I've had other stupid issues but again, no worse than most North American vehicles.

... and oh by the way they are built in Canada now and owned by FIAT, a company known the world over for quality vehicles...uh huh.

On the flip side, maybe you should be asking why are the Sienna and Odyssey so expensive? They have their problems too.

I think the Grand Caravans/Voyagers/Town & Countrys are the best vans out there for the money. I still have two of 6 total that I've owned. All except the newest have gone well over 150K miles (the newest one will soon reach that too.) I had only one major mechanical problem and that was a tranny on a T&C that had over 200K miles. That's the only one I scrapped. The others were resold. I purchased all of them second hand and I used them for work vehilces and they were loaded down with satellite equipment, spools of cable, tools, etc. The 3.3 engine has adequate power combined with great fuel economy for the size of the vehicle. When I needed to remodel my house, I could fit full sized sheet of plywood, drywall, you name it. Try doing that with any SUV out there. Plus, I attached a hitch to each of them and with a trailer they moved furniture, mulch, topsoil, etc. I can't see buying anything else for a work van. When I go on vacation, I take the equipment out, throw in the seats and it's a very comfortable ride, too. My next van will be a 2008 or newer with stow-n-go

Made in Canada means lower quality? Do you realize how many different makes and models are built in Canada?

As for Fiat, that just happened, how in the hell would that effect previous years quality?????

Anyhow, I agree that for the money, the Caravan is a great vehicle. I love my 2002 Grand Caravan. It has acceptable build quality and I have had no issues other than making up for the maintenance that was not done by the previous owner. I still get 19mpg city and over 27mpg highway and the van still looks excellent. I am not saying that build quality is an issue only for Dodge. Build quality for ALL North American vehicles is substandard. Even European cars built in North America suffer. This may be an unpopular view, but it is the truth.

Anyhow, buy what you like because the quality is acceptable and you'll be happy only if you buy what makes you happy.
