Burnt clutch?

Earlier, regrettably, I was driving my '98 1.6 VW Golf and within the space of 5 minutes, I revved it up twice in first gear, to a point where the car pulled quite a bit as if I had crossed some kind of a limit. I don't think I redlined it, but I definitely over-revved it somewhat. Shortly after, the biting point was completely gone on my clutch, stalling as I pulled out in 1st. It would only just move off with the clutch completely depressed. I sheepishly figured that I had cooked my clutch, so proceeded to drive to some where safe to stop, for 10 minutes, but keeping the revs as low as possible. There was a faint burning smell. After driving like this for a while, the clutch issue seemed to go - driving how it used to - and I pulled up, switched off the engine for a few mins and let things cool down a bit. I drove back home another 10 mins, keeping the revs low and the clutch seemed to be as normal, the smell had also left the car.

Do you think I have burnt out my clutch, or caused permanent damage? I'm not quite sure how it works, but my guess would be that even though everything seems to be relatively fine now, that I have probably caused some permanent damage to my car.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Burnt clutch?

What is the mileage on the car? You are probably at the point where you need a clutch. You should be able to flog the car a bit without worry.
