What type of allowance? The kind where you do chores around the house, and get paid for it? Or here son, let me pay you for being my child type of allowance?

I had to do chores for my weekly allowance.

Either way, that stopped when I was legally allowed to get a job (15 years old)

And no, I could give a rats ass.

No, I always had money...I didnt have a set amount of allowance per week (like $30 a week or whatever). I got it ocassionaly, for example when dad came back from overseas trip I got $150-$200 (which by Russian standards is quite a lot). Most of I saved for stuff like PC, car etc...I didnt have a job, but just earned money when opportunity came, assembling PC's, fixing stereos, selling CD's etc..When I bought a car I used it to earn money - in Russia anyone can be a taxi, and you can make quite decent money, it can be dangerous but it was a good way to gain some driving experience, plus I was sick and tired of driving a shitty Lada 2109 and wanted a better car. Then I came to NZ...I never really had a proper job before my current one, just earning a bit when the opportunity came.

I had my chores to do and there was no "allowance" If I wanted money I had to go and get work. So I mowed lawns (my dad would let me use his lawn mowers - the rider and the pusher) to earn some summer money when I was about 10-14 and after that I had a regular summer job doing manual labor from dusk to dawn. No complaints about it at all, its just the way it was.

My allowance was $5 a week. I don't know when it started, but I stopped getting an allowance for doing chores when I was 12.

From then until I got a job I just lived off my savings account...

I got $2 for helping clean the house when I was little, upped to $5 when I hit 13. Once I was old enough to mow the lawn or shovel the driveway by myself, I started getting paid for that. $10 for mowing the lawn in the non-snow months, and $10 for shoveling the driveway in the winter. I still get that when I'm home and I do it, but now that I'm out of the house and 1800 km's away from home, I don't often get a chance to mow or shovel.....

I have to buy all my own stuff though. I only get stuff from my parents at Christmas and birthday and stuff. I bought my own car, insurance, PS2, stereo, etc...

Nothing feels better than looking at something you own, knowing you payed for it with money you earned.

Then start saving, and buy yourself something nice. Say, a nice chrome Borla exhaust for your car....
