Fuel pump location???

I am trying to help a neighbor who says she smells gas inside her 2002 Ford Taurus. I check around the fuel rails with no luck. There is a slight gas smell around the fuel filter. But I think that's normal. I went to check around the fuel pump, but could not find it. Not in the trunk, or under the back seat. I am not a mechanic, just your average back yard jack-leg. Where did Ford motor co. stick the fuel pump????

Re: Fuel pump location???

Ford, like most auto makers making fuel injected vehicles, placed the fuel pump in the fuel tank. This is far from uncommon. Unfortunately, like most domestic car makers and unlike many imports, there is no access panel under the seat or in the trunk for the fuel pump. To access the fuel pump you need to lower the fuel tank.

Before going that route you might check the purge solenoid. Is she one of those people that tries to squeeze more fuel in to the tank after the fuel pump at the gas station clicks off? If so, she may have overfilled the tank and saturated her charcoal canister.

Re: Fuel pump location???

Rod is making a good suggestion. I always did the "three click" fill and often smelled gas. Someone told me to stop at the first click and haven't smelled gas since.
