90 XJ, power window will only move 6 inches either way?

My 1990 XJ driver side window is stuck mid-range. I can move it up or down 6 inches and then stops in either direction. So, I cannot completely close or open the window.

I have the door exposed and I physically cannot force it past these end points. Power window motor? I'm not sure of the role of the window regulator? I worked on the door a few years ago, cleaning and lubricating the rails. Any help appreciated.

I haven't done a Jeep window, but from the schematic it looks similar to the early 90s Ford setup - and on those, the regulator frequently went bad. If you can separate the motor from the regulator and the motor runs fine, I'd say it is the regulator that's bad. (Assuming of course that you've already checked the glass channels and everything else for blockage/corrosion)

Thanks for your reply Fred,

Yes, I believe it is a regulator problem. Any tips on how to force the window up while I wait for my part?

You could just disconnect the regulator, and duct tape the window in the up position while you wait for the new part. I'd also think about working on the regulator once it was out, then the duct tape might not be needed.

Thanks for the idea. It's very difficult to see/get anywhere with the door components. I'd figure someone with experience could be my eyes. I've ordered a new regulator/motor assy. so I might as well get started tearing things apart.

Yeah, it's frustrating to work inside the door. You'll have to disconnect the old regulator anyway....let us know how it comes out.

Re: 90 XJ, power window will only move 6 inches either way?

Finally fixed! ... and thank you to FredJ for ANY kind of response. I just got ignored on the other BIG NAME sites.

It took awhile to get the regulator (couldn't they name it something else?). I wouldn't dare try to buy it from the dealer, so I went online. The first place took my money but never delivered, wasted three weeks there. The next place delivered, but the regulator was for a 1995. The difference being the connector on the motor, otherwise the same. The shop that sold it to me was selling it as an 1990 EXACT replacement. 4 weeks and waiting as to what they are going to do about it. Screw them! I decided to fab up a new connector assy. using the plug from the old regulator.

Having NEVER seen a window regulator before in my life, it was tough to imagine what was going on in the door without being able to see anything. Once I got the part in my hand, everything became clear. There was many a week that I drove around with a half open window. Glad this happened during the summer.

Well done, and you're welcome. Some sites I've found to be judgemental because they've already done the job....those guys forget that there are people that haven't done xxx to their vehicle.

Electric window replacement is a pain, but once done - works better than new! Now you get to enjoy the fact that your AC isn't all going out the window.

That's what I said, better than new! Although, I didn't loose any AC because my system is sickly. Thats my next project and I will most likely have to take it into the dealer. They are going to charge me $200 CAN just to switch/recharge my system + whatever else they make up (Its only low on freon so I won't let them bully me into anything more).

Thanks again!
