first gear issue

This has been going on for about a year and a half now, not sure what’s going on.

From a stop in neutral to first gear it will not engage right away, I usually have to press it against first, then let off and it will go in the second time. was playing with it today and I noticed that if I hold the clutch down for 3 seconds it will go in smooth as butter, just won’t do it when I try and put it into first right away like when the light turns green.

It’s really annoying because that usually results in people honking because they think I’m not paying attention.

Rest of the gears are no issues, reverse doesn’t grind either.

also on a side note I’m not sure if its related or not, but the truck bucks/jerks in low rpm in a high gear, like for instance when I downshift to second to make a right hand turn onto a high speed road, when I press the gas to get going again it sputters/jerks like it’s not getting enough fuel or spark or way too much, I also filled up my gas tank yesterday and its already on half a tank after driving to wal-mart and around work for a couple hours.

Just got down to Florida from Colorado driving it.

Re: first gear issue

The synchronizer for first gear is probably worn a little too much. You might try leaving it in first at a light and depressing the clutch while waiting for it to change rather than going into 1st from neutral. The slave cylinder at the clutch housing may need to be bled of air or the master cylinder may need to be replaced.

Re: first gear issue

I still have this going on, really starting to get annoying, was praying the truck would just hard break so i would know whats wrong with it. I refuse to start replacing expensive parts that don't need replacing.

the thing that boggles me is that it doesnt do it any other time but in 1st gear at a stop. And if i hold the clutch down for 3 seconds longer it goes in like there is no problem, its just if i want to shift into 1st right after pushing in the clutch?

if the synchros where going out on 1st wouldn't it be grinding and difficult to shift no matter what? why it be corrected just by holding the clutch down longer?

my first guess that makes the most sense is that its a hydraulic problem, however my pedal is nice and stiff and i have no other problems in any of the other gears.

i also have a air conditioner leak somewhere, if that has anything to do with anything.
