1988 305 engine/r700 transmission

I have this pair available out of a 88 pickup. Also have a decent 350 4 bbl engine (all mechanical). Can I use the 305 and R 700 in an old car without all of the electronics? Does this transmission hook up to the electronics or is it all manual? I wondered if I could pull manifold and carb from 350 and put it on the 305 to get away from the electronics and simplify my project.

You can definitely carb it, but you can't use the intake off your old engine unless it has centerbolt valve cover heads. The reason is that beginning in 1987, with the centerbolt heads, the angles on the center intake bolts were reduced to 72 degrees which makes it easier to install and remove them, but precludes the older stuff from fitting. There are factory intakes that you can get for the Q-jet on these heads - my 1988 Caprice has a carb setup from the factory.

You will need to find a way to run the TCC on the trans without the computer, but it can be done. The 700R4 is not an electronic controlled trans. The 4L60E for comparison is the electronic controlled version of the 700R4.
