Quick HELP! Engine revs up, shakes, and shuts off

Hi,
My B/F was in the middle of a drive the to Jersey Shore today and as he was trying to leave a gas station, his 2003 Ford Explorer's engine revved up, shook, and shut off. The car can still turn on (so he can open and close window and operate the A/C & and sound system) but when it is in idle the engine revs, shakes, and turns off. What do you think might be the problem? PLEASE HELP SOON!!!!!!

Thanks!

Raychill

Re: Quick HELP! Engine revs up, shakes, and shuts off

Welcome to the forum!

Is his Explorer the 4.0L V6 or the V8? If he gives it a bit of throttle will it remain running, albeit roughly? Does he know the fuel tank is not empty? Did he check anything under the hood while at the gas station?

If he knows it has fuel, and not diesel fuel, I'd suggest he start by making sure all the intake air tubing is properly connected. He could have a significant vacuum leak, a bad misfire or two, or a bad Idle Air Control.
