Re-Hone Cylinders?

i was told but a mechanic that i would need to re-hone my cylinder walls before i put in my new piston/ring asembly. he said you have to do it to make the rings sit right. i thought you only had to do this if your walls were all messed up, not if you are just replacing pistons and rings.


anyway, before i put my CTR pistons and rings in, do i have to do this toi the b16, or is it not nescassary?

yes...you are wasting your time (and your money) if you don't do it. The new rings will not seat in the cylinder wall correctly and your engine will burn oil. I tried to get away without honing the cylinders on my ZC cuz you could still see the hatch marks...but my step-dad (an ASE mechanic) informed me of the same info your mechanic did.

It is a relatively easy process if you know what you are doing and only took us about 15 minutes....if you don't a machine shop should be able to do it for a reasonable cost..hopefully your b16 block is not in the car

you will also need a ridge reamer. cause you pistions wear a lip at the top of the cylinder. and if you dont git rid of it before you install the rings i can crack, chip or even bend the ring when you install them.

well this just sux know dont it, now i gotta find a damn machine shop in the middle of this damn area. any ideas on how much the whole job will cost me?

i payed 125 to bore ,hone, pressure wash, and clean the block

Honing is very easy, and can be done by yourself. You just need to rent the tool, and have a drill. Usually places like autozone, or schucks/kragen/checker can rent a hone.

Thats about how much I payed to get my block honed and hot tanked. It was $150 but worth every penny to have the pro's do it. Mine prolly cost more because I had the block decked.

Yup. Get 'em honed. All they do is put in this really cool ultra-tiny design to help things seat properly. Don't skip that step.

ive seen the hone tool in my local store, how hard is it to do?
