87 ford truck Problems With Starter Grinding When Truck Is Running

ok have a major issue here, gone through 5 starters and a fly wheel and still same problem. starter grinds something bad after truck is started and running. so bad you half to shut it down right away. tried the shims from what my brother said. he passed in December so cannot confirm but almost positive that didnt work. i have replaced 3 starters myself and one busted the starter gear the second truck started.

i need help any info on what i may be would be great. fly wheel installed correctly starters are installed correctly every time and still grinds after its started

"fly wheel installed correctly starters are installed correctly every time and still grinds after its started"

Plainly this can't be true. If the flywheel and starter are installed correctly, you won't get the grind.

"tried the shims... cannot confirm but almost positive that didnt work."

I would say you should not be "almost positive" something didn't work. It either did work or it didn't work, right? I wouldn't eliminate proper alignment of the starter via use of shims until you were absolutely positive. Shims really are the most common method of adjusting starter fit thereby eliminating whine/grind through proper alignment.

Techniques for adjusting starter alignment with shims are decribed in various places on the 'net.

Having replaced five starters and a flywheel and still having a problem at the intersection of starter and flywheel, IMO you are at a point where you should take your truck to a reputable skilled mechanic, tell him your problem and have it fixed.
