98 windstar 3.8 liter - P0402 code problem
Friends,
I am getting P0402 code constantly for the last 2 weeks. I have replaced DPFE sensor and EGR valve with a new ones. I have also replaced EGR hoses to the sensor. It is still the same - I get the P0402 code and the hesitation starts. I had replaced my catalytic convertor 1 year ago. The muffler is original on the car. As Wiswind had suggested - I unplugged vacuum line from EGR valve and plugged the vacuum line with tape and ran car for a day. I got no code. What can be wrong here. Please suggest. Can the muffler be plugged and that forces more gas through EGR system. |

Re: 98 windstar 3.8 liter - P0402 code problem
P0402 is not common......excessive EGR flow.
The only thing that I don't see mentioned is cleaning the EGR ports....although I would not expect them to cause of the code......maybe somehow the wrong code is being reported or read out with the code reader? A good possiblility is a defective EGR vaccum solenoid.....which the vaccum line from the EGR valve will be connected to. There is a little felt filter on it that might be clogged and causing it to not operate correctly.

Re: 98 windstar 3.8 liter - P0402 code problem
please also check hoses going to the vac. canister....and the canister itself..if the hose has cracked or dry rotted or if the canister is damaged it will also cause this problem....do you smell gasses when sitting at idle for awhile or if coming o a sudden stop? I also agree to check and clean or change the filter and also rmove the EGR valve and clean the ports under it...use a shop vac while scrapping the carbon so you dont drop any into your intake.

Wiswind and Chvyl01,
Thank you for the reply. I will check as you both have suggested. Can you tell me ...where I can find the filter, which you have mentioned in your reply. |

Re: 98 windstar 3.8 liter - P0402 code problem
The vaccum line for the EGR valve will connect to a EGR valve vaccum solenoid.
There will be another vaccum line that will connect to the intake manifold and a electrical connector. There will be a small knob like item on the solenoid that you should be able to work off. Inside or under that knob will be a small felt filter that you can clean.
