Not clear what is happening here, does the engine turn over but fail to start, either way if the sec. stays on that must be addressed.

Re: 98 lumina

the problem is not with the key but the ignition cylinder contacts that the pellet resistor in the key... er...well...contacts. If the contacts are worn the resistance that the theft module gets from the key changes. the vehicle thinks its a wrong key and the engine won't crank.

the problem may have began with intermitant no cranks but would then start after the 3min theft derterrant time out.

the dealer will want to replace the cylinder which will need a new pellet key cut to the new cylinder. As you know the keys are $$.

Re: 98 lumina

these cars also frequently have the wires from the lock cylinder to the theft module break inside the steering column in which case you need to replace the cylinder and fish the wires down the colum
