Another Ferrari 312 T4

Hi everyone posted some pictures of the engine for this build a while ago. since then I have decided I was unhappy with the monocoque, so have stripped it completely and I am in the processes of cladding it with aluminium sheet as in the full size, here is the progress so far, thanks for looking

Should have mentioned this is Tamiya's venerable 1/12th scale kit, here is an update of the work I did last night also

Looks really good Nick! What type of ali sheet did you use - is it Coke tins and what adhesive did you use?

Rivet work looks really nice too, did you do them all by hand, or use a 'Rosie the Riveter' tool? Been thinking of making a tool from old clock wheels for doing the upholstery pattern on my project!

Re: Another Ferrari 312 T4

I used the excellent MDC riveting tool on the reverse side (so the rivets are domed not countersunk)

And nothing more sophisticated than Tesco foil roasting tins @ 2 quid a pair - bargain! Fixed with medium cyano

Your build is a work of art by the way, extremely impressive.

Regards

Nick

Re: Another Ferrari 312 T4

Wow, never seen anyone use alumin(i)um foil for covering the chassis. Looks freaking awesome. I just finished building this model. I'll try that technique on my next one though. How do you do the rivets? I'm a little unclear. Are you actually attaching rivets through the foil or pressing the foil tight to the rivets formed in the plastic? Nice pedal work too! This is my effort if your interested:

Re: Another Ferrari 312 T4

To clarify, I sanded the rivets off the tub and then polished it completely smooth. I then rubbed paper templates along the edges of each panel I wanted to make and cut them out and fitted then including any folding. I then embossed (from the rear of each panel, so the rivets appear proud rather than countersunk) The curved areas, such as the top edges of the tub were applied first with bare metal foil so this goes under the foil panels when they are applied.

Hope this makes sense. I'll scan a sketch later if get chance

Nick

Re: Another Ferrari 312 T4

Some mnore progress yesterday:

Built and painted all the brakes, including scratch building a pair of brass plates and fixing bolts on top of the rear calipers
Turned a rear light form clear sprue to replace the solid chromed plastic one supplied

Painted the sponsons and finished the skirts with amtt ali BMF

Finished and fitted the exhausts with rub&buff

Wound exhaust retaining springs from 010 lead wire

Made needles for instrument panel, painted and Glue&Glazed

Made a toggle switch for the steering wheel from a micronut and flattened 010 lead wire - bent up here I notice as well as being very dusty!

Stripped the chrome off the wings

Re: Another Ferrari 312 T4

Here's some progress First gloss coat and decals on, finished the front suspension. Just waiting for everything to harden properly then I'll start polishing. Just lashed it together to see how it looks
