Check engine codes, and a few more ideas
Engine/car is still running shaky in any gear, violent around 1300 RPM, fairly smooth at idle Now I'm always getting the codes 21 (TPS), 23 (Mixture control solenoid), and 34 (MAF) even though i know these sensors "should" be working b/c right now i'm using the Qjet from the old motor. And also, should the timing mark be spot on when i'm watching it? It seems to jump around
Here's what i've done to no avail: -new wires and using AC delco plugs -using coil cap and rotor from the 305 b/c i knew they worked -disconnected torque converter-->shook a little less, but i think thats because vibrations would amplify through the transmission -keep checking the timing but nothing seems to work New Ideas: Jumped timing chain? Harmonic Balancer? Timing still wrong?: When i try to get the timing, i unplug the 4 pin plug from the distributor like i've been told but at that point it barely idles and runs crappy anywhere i set it, it only runs decent when its plugged in..so maybe my timing is still off?

Re: Check engine codes, and a few more ideas
Clear the ECM by removing power for 20 minutes.
Set the base timing at 4-6° BTDC, then keep the eST in bypass until you determine the problem(s).. If the base timing setting seems wrong by the timing mark on the balancer try timing it by vacuum gauge. Verify no vacuum leaks, including the EGR valve and brake booster. Make sure the lean and rich stops on the Q-Jet are set correctly. Make sure the firing order is correct, and closely check #5 and #7 (it's an easy swap to make by mistake).

Re: Check engine codes, and a few more ideas
Thanks for that chart. But i brought the car to my mechanic today. He checked things out before i left and said he "definitely thinks its a balance issue." So it does make sense, engine "runs" fine but still shakes despite EVERYTHING i've done. Might even have it back tomorrow! I'll keep you guys updated on what exactly it was when i find out.

Re: Check engine codes, and a few more ideas
Isn't there something about internal vs external crankshaft balancer and a matching flex-plate....

I would use the vacuum chart to be sure its not some valve issue , or other ignition , internal problem .. |

Re: Check engine codes, and a few more ideas
Funny you ask. My mechanic literally just called and said the guy i got the engine from had put a harmonic balancer from a 70s 350 on it. So yeah...better be a little more careful about what i buy from craigslist. Lucky it wasn't anything worse. The mechanic also informed me that i need a new radiator soon. It's always something! But thats easy enough to replace.
