Welcome to AF!

You may want to get another starter. I think your starter is bad . Another thing it could be is the ignition switch. They go bad on your year of Escort.

Could also be dirty or corroded battery clamps and terminals. Have you taken them off and cleaned them?

Re: 95 escort wont start!!!

How do you know the battery is ok? Because the lights/radio work?

It is possible to have enough voltage to operate the accessories but not enough amps to turn the starter.

Do the old headlight check... with the headlights on, turn the ignition and see if the lights remain bright or go dim. If they go dim... you need a battery. If they stay bright, you have some other electrical problem.

This other problem could be the starter, the ignition switch, or something very simple like a fuse/relay.... check your fuses under the driver side dash and under the hood.

Re: 95 escort wont start!!!

I recently had to replace the negative battery cable end on my 92 Escort. It was one of the clamp-on lead replacement kind, and had the little black connector attached (the one with about 5 ground wires brought together) at to one of the bolts on the replacement cable end. Everything worked except the starter. The corrosion between the 'replacement' cable end and the cable itself was the problem. The car had been starting just fine the week before, and after sitting for one week - it failed completely.

I put on a new ground cable (36" long) held on at one of the bolts to the starter. I cut all of the little ground wires, stripped back the insulation, and soldered them to one heavier wire, which I bolted to the point where the original battery ground cable was connected to the body - behind the battery.

Re: 95 escort wont start!!!

If the engine is turning over when you try to start it, the list of possible problems is endless. Question for you: Does it get cold enough where you live for water to freeze on a regular basis? If it does, and you let the amount of gas in your tank get below 1/4 tank, you could get gas line freeze from water condensation in the tank. The easy way to cure that is to put a bottle of Dry Gas in your tank the next time you fill up. If that's not the problem, I'd try cheap stuff like replacing the air filter or putting a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the tank first. If that doesn't do the trick, you'll probably have to take it to a mechanic and let them figure it out.
