I am looking for any tips to get better milage on my Escape. The best I ever got is 18 mpg (usually around 16), even since it was new. Any Ideas or help??????

Thumbs up Re: 04 Excape Milage

There are several things you can do to get better mileage. Some of these things are:

1. Use an SM rated oil at 5-30 or 5-20 weight.
2. Synthetic oil although more expensive will help out on the gas bill. Use a 0-20 weight.
3. Combine small trips into one larger trip.
4. Put in new plugs and air cleaner element. Use platinum or iridium plugs.
5. If you keep your tools or golf clubs in the back take them out.
6. Air your tires to 35 psi.
7. If you let up on the gas early the vehicle will shift into a higher gear.
8. Time your speed so you don't end up sitting at a red light.
9. When coasting down a hill shift it into neutral. Don't ride the brake.
1. Don't use the A/C if it is a nice day with the windows down.

When getting gas go back to the same pump at the same station. It is important that the vehicle be in the same position at the same pump to get an accurate tally of how much fuel it is taking. Figure the mileage after you've gone around 100 miles. Figuring it at a lower mileage will give you a false estimate.

Don't lay your foot into the accelerator . Once up to speed slightly relieve pressure on the pedal to maintain your given speed.
