Question how much transmission fluid.

I have a 1996 B3500 Dodge van with a 5.2 L engine(318) it has a 4 speed transmission. How much fluid should the transmission hold and what type is best.

Re: how much transmission fluid.

After a rebuild it takes 8 quarts. For just a fluid and filter change it takes 4 quarts. The major reason for the difference is that close to 4 quarts stay in the torque converter.

You want ATF-3 at the minimum, although ATF-4 is the upgrade to that and is the new recommendation.

While the pan is down, don't forget that you will need to adjust the transmission bands.
