Question Pitman arm ??

Once again 1990 K2500 350 auto....

While looking for the rattle I found the idler arm bad and replaced it thought why not do the rest?? So I ordered inners and outters and a new pitman arm..They came today so I got started.. The tie rod ends were no trouble all that is ready to go back in just as soon as I get off the pitman arm that is...I thought I would be smart and I rented a pitman arm puller before I got started but I see no way of using it....

So what is the best way to remove this thing???

Do I have to pull the gear box?

If so how do I remove the inner fender??

Does anyone know off hand what size nut is on that thing??

And as always THANKS!!!!!!

Re: Pitman arm ??

Just replaced the pitman on my truck this past weekend. I believe the nut is 1 5/16. You'll have to move the steering box around to get to it. I loosened the three bolts that hold it to the frame and rotated it a bit until I had clearance to the nut. Not a hard thing to do but having an extra set of hands helping would have been nice.
replaced idler and tie rods also as well as new Bilstein shocks all around and a set of Airlifter air springs bags in the rear. Rides like a new truck again.

Re: Pitman arm ??

One more thing, I didn't need to pull the inner fender. There's enough room to remove the bolts without taking it off.

Re: Pitman arm ??

Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so here is what I did....

For some reason I thought there were 4 bolts holding the steering gear box on so I removed the inner fender to find the fourth...Guess what there are only three...I was glad I removed the fender because I found it much easier to remove the unit and put it on the bench. Once in the shop the impact gun and the puller worked fine and then I just ran the nut down on the new pitman arm...

Anyway that is how I did it....

Re: Pitman arm ??

I just took one off of my parts pickup and put it on my good pickup. I pulled the gear box and used a puller and didnt have to take anything else off. I thought the fan shroud was maybe going to be in my way but it all worked out and i just got it done tonight.
