2007 honda civic k23 vtec problems

I was driving the car home from work and the timing chain slipped. It bent four valves. I took the head of and changed the valves. The car started right up. On the test drive, when the rpm's went to 3,ooo the car would start hoping like if i was out of fuel. I took my car to autozone to see what the check engine light was. Well it said it was the vtec solenoid. Would the vtec solenoid really make the car run like that?
