Angry '99 Neon - key snapped off in ignition

My son just called me and said as he started his '99 Neon up this morning, the key snapped off in the ignition. He has enough of a stub left on the key to insert into the switch to turn the car on and off.

Any suggestions in how to get the broken piece out of the ignition switch, besides calling a locksmith?

Re: '99 Neon - key snapped off in ignition

turn the ignition to run position take a small screwdriver or other small pointed object and on the underside of the steering column directly below the key is a hole that leads to a pin that releases the ignition lock. then with lock removed turn it to the off position.

then you can try a few different things:

1.) firmly bump it on a table to see if you can work it out enough to grab it with needle nose pliers.

2.) see if you can glue the end of a paper clip to the end of the key and get it out.

3.) see if you can glue the rest of the key to the broken off part.

4.) Bring it to a locksmith
