How hard is it to change a rear axle?
Hi guys,
I have a chance to buy a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4, but it was hit in the drivers side rear wheel and bent the axle. So what I'm wondering is, how hard would you say it is to swap out the axle for one I fine at a junk yard? I am an experienced mechanic just never swapped an axle. Thanks for any advice, ~Zechariah |

Re: How hard is is to change a rear axle?
its not that hard at all. Jack the bad side up. Take the wheels and brakes off. Loosen the differential housing cover and drain the lubricant. Remove the housing cover. Rotate the differential so the pinion gear mate shaft lock screw is accessible. Remove the lock screw and the pinion gear mate shaft. Move the axle shafts inward and remove the C-clip lock from the recessed groove in the axle shaft. Remove the axle shaft from the case. Being you have the axle out you could replace the sale why its out. Put in the new axle in and just put it back together the way you took it apart.

Okay, one other question, what about putting in a suspension lift in? I'm thinking maybe 4"? What's the largest tires I could put on it with out a lift? Does anyone know the ground clearance of it stock?
Thanks a lot, Z |
