Looked over the faq's. tran shifts alittle hard into 2nd, no other transition gear problem, not throwing any codes, fluid is pink/red and clear; no leaks evident. what do you think it might be and/or what should i try to test and how? thanks for your time!

Re: Hard Shift into 2nd gear
Is this something new, or did you just start driving the vehicle and don't know if it's normal for this vehicle?

hi and thanks. this has been the way it has shifted since we bought it about a month or so ago. i don't know past that but it has been that way since we've had it. i've just wondered if there is a problem or if it is just the way this transmission shifts.

Re: Hard Shift into 2nd gear
If it were my car and the shift wasn't objectionable in some way - like really jerking instead of smooth - then I would live with it. It may be normal for that car and you may end up putting a lot of money into the tranny without getting a real benefit. A delayed or weak shift would be something more problematic since it may indicate a sticking or weak valve or pressure regulator and may cause additional problems. A firm shift is the better of the two possible problems. At least it is decisive. You can always take it to a transmission shop and see what they say, but be prepared to run away...
You can always give the previous owner a call or e-mail and ask if it is normal. Anyway, make sure your fluid level is ok when hot at idle on a level surface and don't spend money you don't have to.

PS, I used to live next to Randolph Park 1972-76. I love Tucson.

Re: Hard Shift into 2nd gear
"Anyway, make sure your fluid level is ok"
Brian has given you some good advice here. I would check the fluid level to make sure it is spot on. For some reason Toyota transmissions are very sensitive to the proper fluid level. If it is slightly under or over filled, bring the fluid to the proper level. See if that helps. Mike |
