Re: lights

Check the loom of wires inside the trunk, by the driver's side trunk hinge. The wires inside there have a tendancy to frey and break, because of all the flexing that loom is exposed to as the trunk is constantly opened and closed through the years. Open up that loom and check for freyed or broken wires. Fix what you find.

Re: lights

If the wires are fine check the brake lights switch on the front side of the brake pedal lever. Put your head down there and listen for two distinct clicks. You'll hear one as you press the pedal down and another as you let it up. Good chance its bad if you don't hear the clicks. Best way to prove it is with a multimeter. Press the brake pedal and look for 12vdc at the light sockets or check continuity at the switch connector.
