Engine Cleaning Products

Ok, last time I used a hose and just washed it down, heh
I know thats real bad and will never do it again, and actually left my engine looking worse than it did before.
I was planning on cleaning my engine again soon though, so what products would you recommend using when doing it?

There is a great article on SE-R.net on this very subject by Shell Black. If you've ever seen Shell's SE-R, you never forget it. Damn, his engine bay is cleaner than my damned kitchen. And his car has over 100k miles!
