Blower woes. Help needed.
I was driving home from work about 3 weeks ago and noticed that the car was a little slower on the get up. Got home and this is what I found under the hood. Idler pulley is missing, along with the SC belt. As I don't have the 450.00 the dealer wants to get the job done I'm gonna try and DIY it.
The piece left on the idler bracket is siezed up (won't move more then a little back and forth). Any help that can be offered of where to start would be appreciated. I know I need a new belt and pulley, however any advise for this novice is wanted. Also, if this turns out to be a bigger job than anticipated, will it hurt if I do nothing until I work up funds to get it repaired? http://img709.imageshack.us/i/picture001fd.jpg/ http://img514.imageshack.us/i/picture003ma.jpg/ http://img718.imageshack.us/i/picture002u.jpg/ 2000 Pontiac Bonneville Thanks in advance! |

Re: Blower woes. Help needed.
$450! It's a 5 minute job to change that pulley. The bolt that holds it on is probably a left hand thread. The hard part of this job will be putting the belt back on. I've never changed a belt on a 2000+ so I'll let someone else comment on that.
If I were you I'd go buy a belt, pulley & a Chilton's manual. Should be less than $100. This job shouldn't take more than an hour. |

Re: Blower woes. Help needed.
A new belt should be less than 30-bucks and the pulley less than 20-bucks. If you don't have the funds for that amount and you don't need the boost, you can continue to drive it as is, it won't hurt anything!

$450 is a complete rip-off for a job that small. You may also want to look at salvage yards in your area for the pulley and bolt, however, I would buy a new belt at the auto parts store. Gates is a good brand to look for. GregB |
