General question for the historians. I don't recall seeing the car with the serial number on the outside. Has the car always had its serial number on the outside? If so, how many other cars are doing this? Is this a new trend?

Not always, no. When I saw it at Silverstone a few years back (perhaps late 1990's-ish) it wasn't there, but at Goodwoods 2008 Festival of Speed the chassis # was on the rear sill; sometime between it being at Highcroft racing in Connecticut (2006ish) and appearing back over here in the UK is my guess

It comes and goes, along with many of the sponsor decals. Here's a shot of the car at Goodwood in 2001 with #24R and #27R where you can see the 12R decal there on the side.
