Vibration in front end

Hello:
My son has a 96 cavalier, and it has a vibration in the drivetrain. Starts in at around 35 mph. At first I thought that it was a wheel bearing/hub assembly, but both sides are tight. While under the car, I noticed that the shafts that come out of each side of the transmission (5 spd manual) have "play" in them. This "play" is up and down, not back and forth, like the shaft was sliding on the spline. I am not sure if this means bad trans. bearings or if this is normal with this trans.
Thanks, Tom
