really bad oil leak with synthetic oil

Ok ive got a 94 grand cherokee with the 5.2 v8 it has about 160000 miles on it i am not sure how many the motor has itself though. I was changed the oil to a full synthetic about 1500 miles later i was driving on the freeway and noticed my oil gauge was almost 0 i pulled over and it was leaking all of my oil out so i put a full 5 qts in and pulled it off the freeway and onto a trailer to take home every time i start it oil starts pooring out and then when i turn it off it gets worse. if i just let it sit turned off it doesnt seem to leak or if it is then it is not leaking horribly fast. it looks to me like it is coming out where the motor and the bell house to the transmission go together i am thinking rear main seal but i wanted to see if anyone out there knew something else that i might look at before tearing into it so if you could please let me know i would appreciate it.
