Vibration

OK, I have a 1988 325is. Now, at certain speeds (40 and 70 give or take 10 mph) there's some vibration throughout the whole car. At all other speeds, it's smooth riding, but near those its a nasty vibration. It's almost like someone with totally warped rotors slamming on the brakes at 100 (mind you, I'm not hitting the brakes). But, yeah, it vibrates. I was just curious if anybody knew what the hell that is all about. Any way I can fix it? Another question, somewhat off-topic... If I get an aftermarket radio put in, will the code thing still appear? Will everything still work, even after I disconnect the battery? I appreciate any help! Thanks!

I have had that problem in the past. My suggestion is for you to check your wheels. I would not be surprised if one or more of them are bent (note, even a slight bend will cause a problem). That may be what causes the vibration.

The reason you feel it quite a bit more at certain speeds is because at those speeds is when your wheels reach a specific "harmony". Essentially, it's all physics, but sufices to say that if you go get your wheels straightened, it should fix the problem. One thing to note, is that if you live in a place with bad roads, your wheels may get bent again. One way to help prevent this is by making sure your tires are well inflated.

Yeah, it could be a bent wheel. But also when tires wear down they start to make the car vibrate. But first check if they're bent or not...then balance the tires.

Based on my past experience with other cars, I'd say it's likely coming from the tires.

Wow! Thanks! I do actually have a curb-clipped rim. I never really thought that the vibration could be caused by that. I thought it was more of a mechanical component (tranny, engine, boots, joints, etc). I greatly appreciate all of this. Thanks!
