looking to upgrading my engine

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. I want to do small upgrades to the engine such as cool air intake or an exhaust system. I want more power and for it to sound louder. What should i do? Is there any good shops in the SF bayarea? Could i do it myself?
