A/C connections

I haven't done any A/C work in years and want to diagnose and fix the A/C on my 2000. I have a set of R12 gauges but need the adapters for R134a. My question is: do must cars have the same A/C port connections? In other words are the adapters that you can buy common to most cars including my Monte?
