2005 engine type

Hi guys,
I bought a malibu and was wondering what type of engine they have. I forgot the exact term but here is the explanation. If the timing belt is not installed appropriately, the pistons might hit the block and the engine is garbage. In another type of engine, the only problem is performance. I hope my explanation was clear.

Another thing. Does this engine use timing chain or timing belt.

Thank you.

Re: 2005 engine type

You have a timing chain. According to Gates, it is not an interference engine.

Thanks for the gates website, however I did look it up my car in there and it says that it is a Belt drive system not a timing chain.

What exactly is my car? I am confused.

Yeah, serpentine belt for accessories not timing belt. What is litre size of your engine? 4 or 6 cylinders?

4 cylinder.

So that I understand it well, if the chain breaks ( I hope it never does), the engine wont be damaged?
