98 windstar rear aux cooling unit problem.

Ok first let me tell ya, this poor van sat for about a year as the motor went south. So finally got motor replaced, there were some residents present mostly in the engine compartment. They didnt do alot of "chewing" so things are good, van runs great. But the rear unit is blowing HOT air out of the TOP vents. Today I pulled the panel and checked the lines. The coolant lines are COLD and Warm, the Heat lines are hot. The longer you let it run, the hotter it gets. My question is what/where is the shutoff/switch to cut the heat to the unit? I am guessing that there is a bad valve or vacuum line that is bad, but I dont know where to look. Not much info in the manual either. My wife loves this van or else I would have gotten rid of it. But I cant so I must fix it, or else

Maybe start with the switch on the dashboard.
I remember reading someplace about one of the dashboard controls for the rear was vaccum driven.....maybe that is where the problem is?
I did not have the rear unit (wish I did).

Maybe a bad aux air blend actuator. It's located behind the panel where you have the rear ventilation knob switch. Left of the seat who is behind the driver seat.

A Windstar without having the check engine light is not a real Windstar.

Re: 98 windstar rear aux cooling unit problem.

I had this problem. The actuator was staying in the heating position because there was a problem with the dash board selector switch. The part that was not working is a vacuum switch. I tried to clean the switch, but couldn't get it to work and ended up replacing the switch.

I've seen many threads here discussing the same problem. It seems like most of the time the problem turns out to be the switch.

Re: 98 windstar rear aux cooling unit problem.

Thanks so much for the input. I will head towards the dealer to pickup a switch. This place is awsome for trouble shooting problems. One more question, is there anyplace online where there is a vacuum diagram for this year van, 1998. There might be a chewed vacuum line to that I am missing. Thanks again!

Try the Autozone website. Otherwise, you can "rent" one month access to the full service manual for ~$20 at the ford motorcraft website.
