1997 GTP overheating

1997 GTP

Daughters car. Car is overheating, no leaks visible, oil is clean and not milky, trans fluid is normal, water in radiator shows no oil, fans kick on around 200 degrees, have bled air out at thermostat, elbow was replaced last summer.

Car will get to 170 to 200 degrees and be fine until you get in stop and go traffic, then it will start climbing until you have to stop and shut it down and let it cool. Car runs strong, no hesitation with normal performance.

Pulled the thermostat (195 degree) checked it in boiling water, it opened when the water was boiling like it should. Flushed the radiator out with prestone super radiator cleaner.

Could it be the intake manifold gaskets? If so, what symptoms should I look for?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Re: 1997 GTP overheating

Are the fans turning on with the A/C on or off? Did you flush just the radiator or complete cooling system?

Also, how many miles on this GTP?

Re: 1997 GTP overheating

Radiator has a hole in it..... replacing it now. I think when I did the flush (full cooling system), it loosened up a lot of old radiator seal......

Leak wasn't noticible until car was hot from being driven for a while.

Hopefully this will fix the problem.

Thanks for the reply.

For DIY have fun because it can be a real PITA. If you need help let us know. I've replaced two radiators to date. Also, with the age of this car the heater core may be next.
